Migration to this country is far too high - it needs to come down.
We are taking more robust action than any government before.
We will bring this down.
Some migration is down to one-off circumstances. Almost 85,000 people fleeing war and persecution were generously welcomed into Britain from Ukraine and Hong Kong respectively — and it was the right thing to do.
But we need to make sure that immigration meets the needs of the British people.
That's why we're taking action.
We’re introducing a plan that will cut net migration by 300,000.
Our plan is tough but fair.
1. We'll end the abuse of the Health and Care Visas. By stopping visas allowing dependants to come and limiting visas to people caring for people.
2. We’ll stop businesses using immigration to undercut British workers. If migrants want a skilled worker visa, they’ll have to find a job that pays at least £38,700 before they can apply.
3. We’ll scrap cut-price shortage workers from overseas. That means we’ll still take the workers our economy needs, but they won’t be able to undercut British workers.
4.We'll ensure people sponsoring dependants can afford to support them financially. By raising the salary threshold for skilled workers and:
5. We’ll ban overseas students from bringing family members to the UK — unless they’re studying postgraduate research degrees. So students can still come to the UK to study, but most won’t be able to bring family.
But in short, our plan will reduce net migration by 300,000.
