You may have heard that we’re changing the way child benefit is distributed in this country.
These changes are designed to support working families. So no-one has to choose between having a child and developing their career.
To briefly summarise:
1) We’re raising the threshold at which families start to pay the HICBC [High-Income Child Benefit Charge] from £50,000 to £60,000.
This comes into force from this April. Meaning nearly half a million families will gain around £1,300 next year.
2) We’ll end the unfairness of single-earner families being treated the same as double-earner families.
Right now, two parents earning £49,000 each get full child benefit. But one parent on £50,000 starts losing access. We’ll end this unfairness.
3) We’re supporting hard-working families to keep their hard-earned money.
A family with two children, whose higher earner has an income of £65,000, will gain around £1,664 through the changes we are making to the child benefit.
It's only the Conservatives who can be trusted to take the long-term decisions that will benefit working families.
Labour by contrast, don’t have a plan and will take us back to square one.
